What makes our thermostat click on and off continuously?

We have a 100 year old house. We had a new electric heating/cooling unit installed in the attic for our upstairs 4 years ago, and downstairs has the original gas furnace.

We have had several problems, seems I call the repairman every year for something. Our thermostat keeps clicking on and off, like doesn't even run a second and shuts off, clicks on again over and over. We just turned it off, and dh bougt a new thermostat and changed the air filter. Was fine for a while and then started up again. We've called the repairman for this in the past but I don't remember what they did/said. We've had three different thermostats now, don't think that's the problem??
What makes our thermostat click on and off continuously?
It sounds as if the fan kicks on and off quickly for no reason. There are two possibilites for this:

1. An intermittent short in the wire between red and green. This can be a real hassle to track down. Ohm out the wiring and check.

2. A fault in the printed circut board that runs the fan. On many of these relays are normally closed. This means that they have to power up to keep the fan off. If the board has a micro crack in it, when cold the fan will on and off for just a second or two. After the unit is warm, it won't do it anymore. It can be maddening because it usually happens at night or in the early morning.

Hope this helps.

Are there air currents or drafts hitting the thermostat to freak it out? LOL :)
your temp in the house Drops Below the set degree in your House thats why it Keeps Coming On
You obviously have a draft or a cold air leak near your thermostat . A thermostat regulates the temperature, and when you set the thermostat at 68 for example,if the air around the thermostat gets cold it will click on again.

I would check for any open cold drafts in the house and insulate it good for the upcoming winter .
I had same problem, even if you clean your filter

every week, there is still dirt built up in motor

the repair guy, said they need to be cleaned once a year.there could also be a short in the compressor. I am sorry but looks like you call repair man again. good luck

Heater Gauge in my 91 Acura Legend says engine overheating but Engine is cool! changed Thermostat & Water Hose?

The heater gauge says the engine is way hot but I can touch the engine with my hands. The upper water hose busted and replaced it. Lower Water hose doesn't heat up at all. Replaced thermostat. Still no change also the car heater only works randomly. Radiator is bubbling hot, when I open the cap the Antifreeze bubbles and overflows. Stil the engine is at operating temperature not overheating. What could be my problem? do I have a blown head gasket? or do I have a radiator problem? please help!
Heater Gauge in my 91 Acura Legend says engine overheating but Engine is cool! changed Thermostat %26amp; Water Hose?
It is definitely the water pump.

At the first part of the question, I thought of the temp. sending unit, but after I read the radiator is bubbling hot but the upper hose busting and the lower hose not getting hot, that tells me that there is no coolant circulating although the thermostat opens.

Replace the water pump before you do cause a head gasket leak. You will overheat the engine and possibly warp the heads.

REPLACE THE WATER PUMP!
Heater Gauge in my 91 Acura Legend says engine overheating but Engine is cool! changed Thermostat %26amp; Water Hose?
You probably have a dead water pump.
Sorry Bud, Bubbling antifreeze should be head gasket. Does the exhaust smell sweet and or white smoke? The head gasket will go out when you have an over heat situation like the rad hose busting on you.

How do i change the thermostat on a 1998 Cadillac Catera?

Find a library that carries the ALLDATA data base. They have a very good description of the technique involved. You will have to remove the upper intake manifold. This also requires the separation of fuel injection fuel lines. By the way, this is really an Opel/Saab V6, if you didn't know. Perhaps all you really need is flush and fill of the coolant. DON%26quot;T use the GM dexcool, use the Saab coolant or Ford Yellow coolant. SEE the %26quot;dexcoolsettlement%26quot; web-site and the other %26quot;GM Litigation%26quot; web-sites. Good luck!!
How do i change the thermostat on a 1998 Cadillac Catera?
Look in the book. Do what it says. You can find Chiltons Auto Repair manuals at the public library. It's not enough to say, %26quot;Take out the old thermostat and put a new one in and replace the gasket%26quot;. The pictures in the maual can better show you where the parts are than for you to be told to look here and there.

My oil pressure warning light on my Honda Accord 96 goes on when the engine is idle, what is the problem?

I have an accord 96 that has 100,000kms on it. had an oil change recently.

A few days after this oil change, I had an overheat and after this overheat, the oil pressure warning light started acting eratically.

First, after a cold start, the light does not turn on but after the engine warms up, the light flashes. The problem is, while revving the engine, the light goes off and immediately goes on again when the engine is idle.

To address my original problem, mechanics informed me that they would change the oil sending unit, change thermostat valve and thermostat switch.

After this, the problem was still the same (light goes off with revving). They recommended a general overhaul for the reason that the engine had so much sludge and they blamed the problem on the engine flush that was included during the change oil.

Now, i really dont know what to do next. General overhaul is too expensive for my budget.. Any tips?

Thanks very much!
My oil pressure warning light on my Honda Accord 96 goes on when the engine is idle, what is the problem?
the first and obvious question is--have you checked the oil level recently? I've seen drain bolts leak on Hondas if you don't change the washer for the plug and you could legitimately have a low oil condition. so thats the first thing to do.

then, if the oil is full, have your technician put an oil pressure gauge on the car to run a pressure test. That will tell you if the problem is a mechanical one (oil pump) or an electrical one (sending unit/gauge). Your description sounds like a mechanical problem with the oil pump. If the car does have low oil pressure, then the next thing to do is to have the oil pan removed to check the oil pick up for the oil pump. If it is clogged they can clean it. If not, then you'll have to change the pump.

accords are not known to generate a lot of sludge unless the oil is never changed. the engine flushes rarely provide any value.

hope that helps
My oil pressure warning light on my Honda Accord 96 goes on when the engine is idle, what is the problem?
Your oil pump is going bad. what is happening it is not pumping enough oil at idle and triggering your light. an easy way to check is get an oil pressure gauge, hook it up at make sure, this can have disasterous effects on your engine if not taken care of IMMEDIETLY.
Honda's are not known for sludge unless you don't change the oil at all.

Does the car have oil in it?

Could be the pump going bad...or the sending unit may not be reading correctly...or as simple as it wasn't wired correctly.

We had one that was triggered by the e-brake and just had to rewire it.

Sounds like the oil pump though and if it is and its not fixed its a good way to blow up a motor when it eventually freezes up.

My 2000 Cadillac Deville northstar motor is overheating and loosing coolant. I've changed thermostat twice?

The 1st time I changed the thermostat and added coolant, it didn't overheat for approx. 2 weeks. Then I had to put another thermostat in(thought this one didnt work) and put the cooldex antifreeze in as manual requested %26amp; it didn't overheat for another 2 weeks. Now nothing is working and I can't drive it from frequent overheating, Can someone help me and let me know what could be wrong with my car??
My 2000 Cadillac Deville northstar motor is overheating and loosing coolant. I've changed thermostat twice?
Best thing to do is to have the coolant system pressure tested,as well as the cap.The majority of the time it can be found that way. After the pressure test,If a leak is not detected Then you need to do what they call a block test.A block test kit you can buy at a aftermarket auto parts store.A block test is where you have the cap off of the radiator and put a tube in it to measure to see if any exhaust fumes are coming through your coolant passages. (blown head gasket ETC)
My 2000 Cadillac Deville northstar motor is overheating and loosing coolant. I've changed thermostat twice?
Radiator caps are a couple of bucks. You can try that. Rare, but caps lose their sealing ability.

If you added windshield washer fluid to the cooling system, that causes suds and overflow.

More than likely a blocked radiator core. Ask a radiator shop the charge if you pull the radiator or the charge if they pull it for a pressure check.

If you smell antifreeze in the passenger compartment through the defrost, that points to head gasket. Have the cylinders compression checked. Blown head also pumps oil out your exhaust. Your tailpipe will be black instead of gray.

On a different car, the last option is what I paid for after the mechanic misdiagnosed the first three repairs and charged me anyway.
Changing the thermostat doesn't really do much, they rarely go bad. If you still think it is the thermostat, remove the thing, you can run an engine without one. But I don't think it's your problem. Did you have a lot of miles on the vehicle? It could be a head gasket as someone else mentioned. It could also be they the radiator. After a lot of miles they don't work as efficiently as when new. You have all the same conditions that I had in my Mustang years back. I replaced the head gasket, radiator cap, and took out the thermostat and it still overheated. They problem turned out to be the radiator. gl
water pump radiator or blown head gasket id look for white lines on the radiator that would show leaks as the steam dries it stains the radiator or hoses or near the water pump if it blows white steam from exhaust you have bad head gasket

  • 1997 Ford F150 4.6 liter only getting heat occasionally, changed thermostat already problem still exists?

I have a 1997 Ford F-150 4.6 Liter 84,000 miles. The truck takes forever to heat up, when it does I get hot heat, but then the temp gauge starts to drop and the heat goes cold. Sometimes the gauge doesn't drop and the heat goes cold. The gauge never goes beyond about a quarter of the way up. The blower works. I changed the thermostat, what I thought was the most obvious for what seems to be over cooling, but the problem still exists. I checked all lines and fluid is flowing through the heater core as well. At a complete loss??????
1997 Ford F150 4.6 liter only getting heat occasionally, changed thermostat already problem still exists?
Check and fill the Coolant again and into the radiator, because there is a giant air bubble that moves around after you drain and then refill the coolant once. Sometimes on my truck the coolant dows not flow from the plastic overflow reservoir into the radiator, that's why I said to fill the radiator directly again.

I think the factory thermostat rating is about 195 degrees or so, so check the package.

Is the heater core plugged? Or the lines to it?

Ford escort van heater wont work. Have changed thermostat. Blower etc ok?

Hi can anyone help? I've noticed as the weather is getting colder the heater in my wee van is blowing cold air. I've checked the water level, fitted a new thermostat, with no effect. I can get a slight heat if I set the temp at max and the blower at min, but nothing to speak of. The van temperature gauge does not overheat. no sign of any emulsification in the radiator water. I've tried squeezing the heater hose in case there is an air lock. Still wont work.

Please someone help before I freeze to death.

Ford escort van heater wont work. Have changed thermostat. Blower etc ok?
Is the linkage to the heater Matrix connected ?

Is the Matrix air locked ? bleed

are the shutters letting air into car open ?

    squeezing pipes will not work.
Ford escort van heater wont work. Have changed thermostat. Blower etc ok?
I assume the heater hoses are cool rather than hot.

My old Escort van had a little air vent in the heater hose to allow you to get rid of air locks. If yours doesn't have one, disconnect both hoses %26amp; flush through the heater matrix with a hosepipe. Refill the cooling system by parking the van on as steep an uphill slope as you can (or use ramps). This should keep the heater hoses full.
I've done a little research to determine the components used in this particular heater system. Being that I am from America and we don't have Escort Vans, I will have to rely on service maunual to determine how the heater system operates. The previous answers are very good suggestions. In my experience most of the time this condition is caused by lack of coolant flow to the heater core. This can be caused by a couple of different reason. First, an airlock in the system, which can usually easily be corrected by bleeding the coolant system. This bleeder screw will normall be located on top of the engine somewhere around the thermostat housing/upper radiatior hose. In short, ensure that the cooling system is actually full. Start the vehichle, remove the raditor cap, turn on the heater to full speed and temperature, and allow to reach operating temperature, After preparing the system to fill, begin filling at the radiator. Once the engine has reached operating temperature, the thermostat should open and any air pockets should be forced back out of the system. After ensuring the system is full, replace the radiator cap, and check the heater output temperature. If it is still not producing the desired output temperature. Place you hand on the Intake and Output hose of the heater core. If the system is working properly both should be fairly hot. Almost too hot to keep your hand on the hose very long. If both hoses are not hot, you have one of two problems. Either the heater core has an air pocket causing an air lock or from the research I have done, the heater control valve is not allowing the proper flow through the heater core. I believe this is a project that you will need to check these items and get back with me with what you found. I will be more than happy to walk you through the repair process to get your heater working. I don't think this is a serious or expensive repair, but you do need the knowledge to know what to check and how to correct the problem when we find it.

Good luck and Hope to hear from you soon,
it's the the valve that switches between cold and hot air as you turn the temp dial, i can't remember what the exact name of it is. The screw that it piviots on will have seized, it's a common fault on lots of Fords.
they call it blend door, yours might be cable operated ,check the cable when you move the temperature knob, feel if there is resistance,,some times the lock that hold the cable just come off making the blend door not to move fully
I had a build up of corrosion in one of my water pipes where it connected to the aluminum head. If your heat wasn't used for 6 months during the summer, a blockage could form due to the coolant not circulating through the hoses, pipes, and heater core.
I'm not familiar with the ford escort van. However you might want to check the lines coming out of your heater core in the engine compartment. After having the vehicle get up to operating temp and the heater on you should be able to feel both lines coming out of the heater core. Both of these lines should be hot! If one of the lines are still on the cool side you might have a blockage in your heater core. You can try clearing the blockage or replacing the heater core.

94 Prelude overheating, but nothing hot under the hood. Change Thermostat already, what next?

I have a 94 prelude that i had the engine replaced in back in November. Everything was running fine, but the car would go past the middle point for temp when the car would sit for a while, but then it would go back to the middle point on its own.

Well, last saturday i was on a gravel rd and i peeled out and gravel kicked up and about 5-10 minutes later, i notice the temp gauge was all the way hot. I have changed the thermostat, blead the line, and refilled the coolant and the car gets hot is only about 1 minute. It literally goes from off and cool to all the way hot in about 60-90 seconds. Also, although the temp gauge is all the way hot, the radiator cap, plastic resovoir, no hoses, or the engine is hot. I take the radiator cap off and the coolant is not hot at all.

what is my issue. Please help?

Replace the temp gauge sensor and see if that's the culprit. Also, for $35 you can get a radiator cap with a build in temp gauge, so you can compare and see if your dash gauge is screwy.

It is on the engine block beneath the upper radiator hose. Remove the hose and you will see it. It cost $20 to do it yourself

How do you change the Thermostat on a 1998 Ford Windstar?

First answer correct. You may want yo drain the Radiator into a pan. At least enough so when you remove the Hose at the engine Antifreeze not go everywhere. I not sure how hard the Drain is to access, it usually on the Driver side bottom of radiator. If, you not find it just be ready for a little Antifreeze coming out and top off when everything replaced.

Also, LOOK at how the Thermostat is placed, not want to put it in backwards.

First you follow the top radiator hose till it goes to the head. Undo the hose from the haed, take off the goose neck the hose came off. the thermostate is in there. Don't forget to use a new gasket.

No heat in my 97 ford f150... changed thermostat..?

i have a 97 ford f150 4.6L.. i had the heat stop working.. so i went to auto zone and they suggested that i change the thermostat.. i did soo. drove it around all day doing odds and ends.. the heat got alittle warmer but not like it should be.i was wondering if i was to flush the heater core if that would solve my problem and how well will that work... could there be anthoer problem.. help plz.. its like -12 here i would love to have heat when i have to go back to work on monday...
No heat in my 97 ford f150... changed thermostat..?
No need to spend money on a radiator without first testing some things.

Feel both heater hoses, they should be close to the same temperature. The larger 3/4%26quot; hose is the inlet and should feel slightly warmer than the smaller 5/8' outlet. On most full size pick up trucks, the positioning of the heater core places it higher then the radiator fill and can trap air in the heater core, this will usually give some heat for a moment then go cold. This doesn't sound like what you are explaining.

It sounds like there is some blockage in the heater core. Flushing the heater core actually is a good idea, but make sure to back flush it too.

When purging the coolant system, make sure the heater, not defrost, is on and the fan is on low. this will open the heater control valve and allow air to be forced out of the heater core.

The only other thing I can think of that could be a problem, is a bad or weak radiator cap.

    Hope this helps. Christopher
No heat in my 97 ford f150... changed thermostat..?
probably have a blend door broken, or blend door motor frozen, if you're lucky its the heater control switch
Question have you ever flushed out the cooling system and put in anti freeze yet?The problem you might have is that the radiator might be plugged up, you think of changing the radiator for a new one.Because if you haven't flushed it out in awhile like years it might be that the reason for a plugged up radiator is the radiator get stuff built up on the inside of it and can't pass the coolant very well through the inside fins of the radiator and secondly when you refilled the radiator did you leave the engine run while filling it up because you might have air trap inside the cooling system and this can cause it not to heat up either but leave the heater on high while filling it up with anti freeze this will push the coolant through the system and get the air out and hope to get the heat you need. These are good type of engine that don't get the coolant through them very well air get trap somewhere in the system and can't get out while refilling them with anti freeze or coolant.Try these methods and see what happens.Good luck! hgm20002000@yahoo.com

Heat doesn't work after a thermostat change, '98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC.?

Quick details- Girlfriend ran car alone on the expressway, lost heat. Called me, I told her to check temp gauge, it was topped out. Drove down to check car, no busted belts/hoses, coolant at a normal level. Changed thermostat, got heat for about 5 minutes, then got cold (though not as cold as the outside temp.). Temp gauge is reading perfectly fine but no heat at all. It is cold in Michigan. Thanks
Heat doesn't work after a thermostat change, '98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC.?
probably air locked....should have a little bleeder type valve near the top of the engine, probably on one of the heater lines.....why did it overheat to begin with?
Heat doesn't work after a thermostat change, '98 Dodge Stratus 2.4 DOHC.?
If the problem started after changing the thermostat, you probably have an air pocket in the line. This is keeping the hot radiator water from reaching the heater core and warming up your inside air.

Take it to a mechanic and have them get the air out.
There is probably air in your heater core. Consult a repair manual on burping the cooling system. When burping run the car with the heater on. that will let the coolant flow through the heater core and pull the air out.
You got an air bubble. Fill the radiator with the heat settings wide open for max heat coming out of the daskboard. run the engine til it is full hot -- 10 minutes at least. DON't gun it -- you'll break up large bubbles into small ones - harder to get it all out.

I f that doesn't work, run the engine til it's full hot, turn it off and pull the heater hose where it is at its highest point in the engine bay.... be ready to put it right back on.... You'll know if you got a bubble or solid water....

GM 2.8 Liter and 3.1 Liter motors from ~ 1986 to 1998 have a real pain in the *** bubble spot just behind the thermostat...... So trace your hoses if you're still stuck.
I have a 2000 stratus with the same problem and now my blower motor resistor is going out have u gotten any good replys on this yet??

I have absolutely no heat in my truck. I've had the thermostat changed so what's the problem?

problems with the heater core , or the water valve , or the temp actuators , just to name a few.
I have absolutely no heat in my truck. I've had the thermostat changed so what's the problem?
Does it still blow just not hot air? If so your heater coil is most likely your problem. Not sure how much that will cost you since that will depend on the vehicle and where you go.

The thermostat has nothing to do with the heater. Thermostats control how hot or cool the engine gets not the heater. It opens and lets water from the radiator flow when the engine gets hot and closes once it reaches it normal operating temp.
I have absolutely no heat in my truck. I've had the thermostat changed so what's the problem?
ryan m has it right on the blend door were the motor sits on it the plastic piece on this trucks crack and the door wont open for air that comes through the heater door 2types of fixes on you have to pull dash out and replace blend door the other if your handy involves removing blend door motor and doing something with it you can find it if you search the internet try searching ford explorer no heat
check to see if the heater core is not leaking. are you losing coolant. the coolant runs thru the heater core and the blower blows the heat into the cab. is the carpet wet on the passenger's side of the cab? if you are not losing any coolant, then your lines (hoses) are plugged or your heater core is plugged. back flushing might help, but it is best just to replace them.
Not enough radiator fluid or a broken radiator fluid pump or the rubber serpentine drive belts needs checking, Look for leaking hoses or for cracks. If you see green or yellow fluid on the ground that's the sure sign of radiator fluid is low or maybe all gone. Open rad cap to see( cold engine only!!!).
You didn't give much info but it sounds like the valve that is suppose to open that allows hot water from the engine to enter the heater core is not working. Or if it is an older truck someone may have bypassed the heater core because it was leaking.
May be a problem with the radiator, the heater core, or a blockage in the water system in the engine
It's probably the temperature blend door on the HVAC unit inside the cab.
have the radiator checked.....solved a problem i had.

My car heats up fast even though I changed thermostat, water pump and also radiator. Its Mazda 1999?

I have Mazda 626 1999.After driving 5-15 minutes my car temp point is full red zone(H).I have also changed thermostat, water pump, radiator cap and at last a used radiator.I have also checked there is no leak of coolant anywhere. Please also let me know if it is a major problem.I have also changed head gasket.I dont smell antifreez. The oil looks good there is no water.I dont know wht to do now.Just to let you know i have changed used radiator and also when i drive for 15min it gets heats up and the coolant comes back to coolant reservoir.
My car heats up fast even though I changed thermostat, water pump and also radiator. Its Mazda 1999?
sounds like ur coolant is not circulating. I suggest turn the car on and check your radiator hoses. Try to feel if coolant is passing by, or one hose gets hotter than the other. if both hoses have same temp. then i would say, did you make sure ur thermostate is open. Everytime you do anything with cooling system it is always recommended to run the vehicle at stand until thermostate kicks in. Also do the pressure test on the radiator which should indicate if u r loosing any pressure if yes then u have a leak somewhere if not, then radiator should hold the pressure.

    good luck
My car heats up fast even though I changed thermostat, water pump and also radiator. Its Mazda 1999?
fan ok belt tight recheck thermostat sure its not upside down

    check compression for leak

might be head gasket bad and heating up coolant
I hate to say this but you have probably blown a head or cracked a block. Check the acid level of your coolant. (Exhaust entering your cooling system will raise the acid level.) A mechanic should have the test kit or maybe they sell something like a litmus paper at an auto supply now.

Either way, It doesn't look good.

    Sorry.

one day my heat quit working in my (95 taurus 3.8)so i got on the free way and it started blowing luke warm then 10 min later it was blowing hot as soon as i got off the freeway it started blowing cold instantly,i took it to a shop and had the thermostat replaced,he even took the hoses off the heater core and blow it out,and still the same ,after leaving the shop it was getting really close to over heating so i made it home waited 2 hours and left my house againgot on the freeway(yes dumb)and it started over heating this time the gauge was reading that it was over heating but the car sounded normal and ran normel, but i pulled over anyway and turned the car off and i could hear bubbleing coming from the resivor, got back home safe the next day got in my car and drove it around all day and it was fine, but iam afraid that it will overheat again, what could be causeing it to act like this?
Over heating car changed thermostat, acting really weird?
there my be air still in the system
Over heating car changed thermostat, acting really weird?
Most of these cars have an electric fan that helps keep the engine cool, check to see if its functioning properly.
It could be a bad thermostat, or one rated higher than what your car is made for. Usually 180 deg is safe. You could have air in the system, check this by starting the car cold and taking the radiator cap off and let it run for a few minutes. Keep an eye on your coolant level, if it goes down, add anti-freeze. After about 5-7 minutes and your coolant level looks good, replace the cap %26amp; check your resevoir %26amp; make sure it is up to the warm/hot line. After it is %26amp; the system is closed back up, shut the car off for 5 minutes. Then start the car %26amp; take it for a drive, this should've taken care of the problem. If it doesn't, you might want to have you water pump checked out. Good luck.
I had a similar issue in my F150 p/u. Turned out to be two things...a vacuum check valve and a %26quot;tired%26quot; diaphram on an airflow gate (door) under the dash. replaced them and now they work like new!
If you want to be on the safe side, take it to a different mechanic (a competent, conscientious one) and have him replace the Thermostat again, with a high quality brand, and have him check the fan too. Make sure there is heat coming out of the heater, and the temperature is stable before you leave the parking lot.

99 Subaru Legacy over heats! changed, thermostat, radiator, waterpump, no head gasket symptoms. what is wrong?

i was driving last week andthe hose that is connected to my radiator from the top snaped off. The part that you connect the hose to the radiator with cracked off. Anti-freeze sprayed ever where and i pulled over. I put a new radiator in and it still would over heat, so i changed the thermostat and it still over heats. The water pump is 7 months old. it wont over heat immediatly it takes driving a few miles. when i idle sitting still it wont over heat. Only when i rev the engine up it starts to over heat. Also my heat comes through the vents cold. I was low on oil ( i added one qt) no white or blue smoke from exhaust, no water in oil, no oil in anti freeze, my fans are running fine. what could cause this?

It sounds like you have a blockage or that the heat transfer surfaces within the block are fouled. I don't know if you have the means but it sounds like you may need to pull the engine so you can get a better look at the heat transfer surfaces and to visually inspect the cooling channels both within the engine block and heater core. As a Scoobie lover, I feel your pain and wish you the best.
99 Subaru Legacy over heats! changed, thermostat, radiator, waterpump, no head gasket symptoms. what is wrong?
sounds like you have air in your cooling system. is there a way to bleed the system? you may also have a blockage somewhere
This is going to sound odd but I went thru the same thing and it was my radiator cap.I spent alot of money I didnt need to because of a $5 part.

2001 Olds Alero Overheating. already changed thermostat?

I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero and it has been overheating on me for a couple weeks. It's getting hot enough the the engine starts to sputter, but it has never actually died on me yet. I changed out the Thermostat yesterday at my Fiancees house, and on the way back to my house (about 7 miles away) it started overheating again. Or I should say it started sputtering and the light came on. When I pulled over, I checked the engine myself, but it did not seem very hot. What could be the problem?
2001 Olds Alero Overheating. already changed thermostat?
It sounds like you have a head gasket leaking. You can buy a tester that can check that at a parts store. Hope this helps.
2001 Olds Alero Overheating. already changed thermostat?
could be a coolant temp sensor...but you could also have a head gasket leak or intake gasket leak...check you coolant levels..and your oil...if it looks like a milkshake your in big trouble. Get the car look at right away. we had a customer with your same problem and they chose to just change the t-stat but they had an internal head gasket leak. it could have cost them an engine

Toyota Paseo 94 vibrations when you mush the gas what could it be?

Have done tune up plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, put in new clutch, oil just changed tonight, catylic converter changed tonight, water pump changed, thermostat changed, air filter changed, and oxygen sensored changed. The car has about 156,000 miles on it. It sounds as if something is loose but don't know what it could be.

    Thermostat temperature never changes?

I have a honeywell setback thermostat, and the temperature on the thermostat never changes below the temp. i have set on it, but it still turns on the furnace. Is it supposed to do this, or is there something wrong?
    Thermostat temperature never changes?
Those thermostats maintain the temperature within 1/2 of one degree. Therefore, you may not notice the temperature changing and the unit turns on more often for shorter cycles.
    Thermostat temperature never changes?
this is normal during the winter months. the thermostat kicks the heat on when it gets down, and kicks it off when the temp has been reached...it might be in a fraction of a degree and this would be hard to tell.
Could be you are in setup mode. Have you already programmed the stat? If yes, do you have a resume button or one that takes you back out of the set up mode? The others are correct in that your temperature should only fluctuate a degree plus or minus, depending on the temperature differential you programmed. In other words, if you set the temp in heating for 70, when the temp drops to 69, your furnace will come on. When the air temperature reaches 71, your furnace will shut off. If you set the differential to 1, that is 1/2 degree under and 1/2 degree over 70. That is a very tight range, but if you want it to be a constant 70, that is where you need it set. You can change the differential to 2, which would give you a 1 degree +/-.

  • I changed my thermostat gasket three times now and its still leaking at the bottom and not on the top I ?

tighten the bolts down real good. I dont know what could be the problem. I have a 1989 ford thunderbird lx 3.8
I changed my thermostat gasket three times now and its still leaking at the bottom and not on the top I ?
maybe a crack inthe housing...or misaligned thermo stat?? is it top mounted or on its side?

    try using some sylastic goo
I changed my thermostat gasket three times now and its still leaking at the bottom and not on the top I ?
Are you sure the thermostat is in correctly? Did you clean the old gasket off completely? If you leave some of the old gasket without realizing it, that can cause a leak.

I believe the housing part that comes off has a lip for the thermostat to seat into and if it is not seated, that will cause a leak also. Use some RTV or anything sticky to help hold it in place until you get the housing seated.

If the housing has scratches or pits that are very bad, that will also cause a leak. Again, use some RTV to help seal the gasket. That will fill the voids that the gasket is not sealing. Also check to see that you didn't crack the housing possibly by not getting the thermostat seated the first time.
Sorry to here you are still having problems with that. Go back and see if they offer a thicker gasket. Some places will sell a thick rubber gasket. Try getting a wire brush or something and sanding on the surfaces to be sealed. Are you sure something is not cracked? If all else fails use the rtv gasket maker and put it down real thick on both sides of the metal housings. Let this dry for 15 minutes or so , insert gasket between then put the neck on and tighten down. Have had to do this on many older 350 Chevy's that way. Sometimes after time the surfaces will warp and the thin gasket is just not enough.
Did you clean the old thermostat gasket material off before installing the new one? is the thermostat and gasket the correct way up, you could put a thin bead of silicone on the manifold and thermostat housing as well, and on the threads of the bolts, the thermostat housing could also be warped,
It could be the wrong thermostat or that you've not cleaned the two surfaces good enough what I try to do is use a paint scraper and fine sand paper and make sure the two surfaces are fully dry but I recommend using a high temperature gasket maker that runs about 8 bucks bec it can be used many times and helps stop or prevent any possible leaks.

Hope that helps and best of luck.
Need more information. Is it bottom of thermostat housing or bottom of the engine? If it is leaking from bottom of the housing, the housing is no good.
maybe the thermostat slid under the housing. they will do that sometimes. try putting the thermostat in the block first. or it could be your not tightening the bolts evenly. just tighten each bolt a little at a time until they both are tight.
make sure the thermostat is the right one for your car and it's possible the housing is warped, buy a new thermostat housing.
Make sure you have the right one then put some FORM-A-GASKET on it.

Can be found at any auto parts store.

92 Honda Accord. Changed thermostat b/c stuck open. Now radiator steams when at stop lights. Fans working.?

Changed thermostat b/c engine would barely heat when arriving at work (+10 miles), night temps below freezing. Replaced w/generic, problem solved. Shortly after, radiator plastic top cracked open (since repaired), but now steam comes out of cap when stopped or parked. Engine gauge displays normal temp. Have heard fans come on after parking. Could the generic thermostat be defective or be too tight? Should I purchase a more expensive genuine Honda part? Coolant appears to be circulating per visual test with cap off.
92 Honda Accord. Changed thermostat b/c stuck open. Now radiator steams when at stop lights. Fans working.?
OEM parts always work best, but I suspect an air pocket in your cooling system. The thermostat housing should have a bleeder screw in it. Remove the screw (with engine off and cool) and add coolant to the radiator till it starts coming out of the bleeder hole. Then replace the screw, and top off the radiator.

Hope this helps and good luck
92 Honda Accord. Changed thermostat b/c stuck open. Now radiator steams when at stop lights. Fans working.?
First, you need to establish that the coolant system is sound - have the coolant system pressure tested - this is a quick and inexpensive test that will pinpoint any leakage in the cooling system.

Once you know the coolant system is OK, you should assure that the system is properly bled and topped off. If everything checks out, perhaps a new, replacement thermostat is in order.

Does anyone know how to reset a computer in a Suzuki Aerio 2003?

Changed thermostat and now the car turns on but shuts off after a few minutes like its stalling itself out.
Does anyone know how to reset a computer in a Suzuki Aerio 2003?
To reset the ECU, just disconnect the positive battery terminal and then press the brake pedal a few times to drain any residual charge. Then reconnect the battery terminal. You can also pull the fuse for the ECU, which is usually located in the fuse box located under the hood....
Does anyone know how to reset a computer in a Suzuki Aerio 2003?
normally you need a special OBD2 scan tool. you can disconnect the negative battery cable with the headlamp switch turned on for about 10 minutes. this will erase the computers memory and drain power from the capacitors. just be aware that this will also make you lose all the memory on your radio.
Take it to an auto parts store, most of them have a diagnosis computer that will clear all the codes. They will usually do this for free...good luck
I used to have a car that the transmission would mess up and I would have to reset the computer occasionally. All i had to do was unhook the battery cables and put them back on.
Disconnecting the battery will not clear the code. Suzuki is aware of it, because when I called to make an appointment of the %26quot;chek eng%26quot; light, they knew right away on the phone what the problem was. Told just to stop by anytime and they will clear it

What is the easiest way to change the thermostat on a 2006 Dodge Charger 3.5L V-6?

You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here - carinsurance.deep-ice.com
What is the easiest way to change the thermostat on a 2006 Dodge Charger 3.5L V-6?
Not the easiest but the only way is to take off the thermostat housing and change the thermostat, noticing how it's positioned. Use sealant on both sides of the gasket, and put the thermostat housing back on.

Are you sure you have a thermostat problem? The only thing the thermostat does it to delay the coolant from going to the radiator until the engine warms up. Once the engine warms up, the thermostat usually stays open until you shut the car off. Your fan regulates the engine temperature, not the thermostat.

Furnace won't quit blowing, changed thermostat, worked good for 2 days.?

My furnace blower was running continually, so I changed the thermostat. I got the wrong one, not knowing I had a heat pump. So I rigged it up with just the red on rh, white on w, green on g, and yellow on y, no jumper between rh and rc. The original thermostat had black on X1, tan on E, red on R, nothing on Y2, yellow on Y1, white on W1, blue on W2, and a jumper from W2 to X2.

After I changed the thermostat, it cycled on and off with temperature just fine for 2 days. Now it blows all the time again if I leave the breaker on, like it did before. So I completely unhooked the thermostat and it still comes on and runs constantly if I turn the breaker on. Is it dangerous to hook it back like I had it and just heat the house when I need to by switching breaker off and on til I have time to troubleshoot it more on Sunday? Thanks for any help.
Furnace won't quit blowing, changed thermostat, worked good for 2 days.?
wont hurt it abit, tip look inside the air handler where all the low volt wiring is and see if you have wires touching anywhere, also look on the thermostat and see if it has a switch for gas or electric heat, make sure you have it on the correct setting, good luck those kind of problems will drive you crazy trying to figure them out
Furnace won't quit blowing, changed thermostat, worked good for 2 days.?
    replace the fan/limit switch
Yes, it %26quot;could%26quot; be a fan limit switch if you have a gas or oil furnace as a backup.

Otherwise it is more likely a bad fan relay or the contact on the sequencer for the fan if you have electric backup. Either of those can get a little burnt and stick closed, fused.

It likely has nothing to do with the thermostat. If it is just the fan running, as is likely, and not the heat then it is relatively safe.

I think the fact it worked for a couple of days was coincidence. The component opened normally and worked until it stuck again. That is not all that unusual.

In order to help more or better we need to know what kind of system it is to know what turns on the fan, if it is a fan/limit, sequencer, or relay. The relay may be on the main board.

    Good Luck.

  • 2001 chevy blazer. no heat! changed thermostat, put new hoses in filled with antifreeze still not hot?

when i took the hoses off and put them back on I had heat for about 10 minutes then it went back to cold
2001 chevy blazer. no heat! changed thermostat, put new hoses in filled with antifreeze still not hot?
You have caused an air lock in the heater matrix by changing the thermostat and hoses. When you drain water out, it is replaced by air. To cure this, take off the cap for the radiator filler, and start the engine, and rev it up slightly until the temperature gauge reaches the normal position. Now you need to have someone standing by with radiator coolant, and watch the water level in the rad filler suddenly disappear. They have to top up the rad, while you keep the engine running, more air bubbles will appear and the water level will drop again. Keep topping up and run the engine until no more air bubbles appear, Job Done.
2001 chevy blazer. no heat! changed thermostat, put new hoses in filled with antifreeze still not hot?
Please do not remove the radiator cap while the vehicle is running, this is not safe. If the air pocket is trapped in front of the thermostat, when it purges it can spray hot coolant out the radiator filler hole. At 180 to 200 degrees.

The easiest way the get the air out of the coolant system. is to park on an incline facing up or jack up the front of the vehicle. The reason for this is becuse the heater core and thermostat housing sit just higher then the radiator fill when the vehicle is on a flat level surface.

Now, slowly remove the radiator cap and top off the coolant level. You will notice air starting to bubble out of the filler neck. Continually to top off the coolant until no bubbles are present. Now place the palm of your left hand over the filler neck to seal the radiator, with your right hand squeeze the upper radiator hose close to the thermostat housing. You will feel coolant raise up against your palm and as you release the hose you will fill the fluid level drop. Do this twice, remove your hand off the filler neck and top off coolant level. This step will take several attempts to get most the air out. Also work your way up the hose with each top off. Once no more air is visible and the level is at the inner rim of the neck, install the radiator cap, fill the over flow bottle to about 3/4. This will be important as the engine cools down.

Start the vehicle and let idle. Turn off all accessories to include the heater and blower. Watch as the temperature gage increases. Once the gage reaches 1/2, turn on the heater with the fan on low speed. Watch the gage as it raises to just below 3/4, this is when the thermostat should open and the gage temp. drop slightly. You should now notice an increase in passenger compartment heat.

Turn off the vehicle and feel both heater hoses, they should both feel hot, but the smaller return will feel just slightly cooler. If both are hot, you have purged the air out of the system.

What usually happens when the coolant system is disturbed, an air pocket can develop under the thermostat causing it not to open. The thermostat, temp. sensor, and temp. switch need to be submerged in fluid to operate properly.

Take your time and be careful. Under no circumstance do you every purge a coolant system with the radiator cap off, unless you are wanting to get 2nd and 3rd degree burns.

Hope this helps and good luck. Christopher
Possible Air Bubble in system. Start the car and let it idle and make sure the temperatur control on your heater is all the way to the hot side. When it gets up to temperature, the thermostat will open and let water through the system. Have the Radiator cap off, and watch the level. You will probably have to top it off before you finish. But remember, have your Temperature control all of the way to hot with the heater on.
could be the heater core is plugged up/ sometimes the door that switches back and forth between heat and cool (heater core-a/c coil) stops working. listen down under the dash while someone works the control from cool to hot and see if you can hear the door moving back and forth. sometimes (depending on car) you can tell if the control feels different, like it has no resistance when you move it back and forth, there should be some. to check the heater core remove the hoses under the hood and see if water will flow thru it by placing a hose on one and flushing water thru out the other one. if its plugged completely it must be replaced but partially plugged you might be able to flush it out.
An air pocket will be the most likely culprit. There are other scenarios that apply

here and just a month ago we had one with the same symptoms as yours and we

purged and bled with always the same results.... then we discovered the heater

blend door had a cracked plastic gear. The blend door (not the mode doors) was

Ok once we replaced the plastic gear and the heater worked like a champ! This

was kind of tricky to find and I hope it may help!
Flush or replace heater core. solved
heater core plugged up back flush it might clear it some most likey needs replacing

remove heater hose flush water thru heater core both way a few minutes try again

Changed, thermostat, waterpump and top radiator hose, car still says its overheating and i got no heat inside?

i have a 2000 chevy cavalier, as i was driving home4, the top radiator hose blew on me i stopped and replaced it, since then the car overheats, and doesn't have any heat in the compartment. I figured it might be the thermostat so i changed that which was a pain in my ***, since the nut was rounded off... but since i got it off i figured that i might as well change my water pump, i put the car back together, filled it with antifreeze, started her up but still no heat, and the car still is over heating .... i checked for water in the compartment incase the heater core was leaking but no water? im lost? any ideas?
Changed, thermostat, waterpump and top radiator hose, car still says its overheating and i got no heat inside?
How would i go about checking if the head gasket is blown? i checked my oil and its a nice brown color, from what i understand thats a good thing.... um... its really cold now adays, so seeing anything out of the tail pipe is kinda hard, um... if it was a head gasket.... is it something easy to fix?

    any other ideas?
Changed, thermostat, waterpump and top radiator hose, car still says its overheating and i got no heat inside?
if your lower raditor hose is not collasping rev motor look and see if its not that time for a new radiator
    refill the radiation with coolant...

had the same problem with my parents' 04 explorer - thermostat was OK, hoses replaced, still no heat and overheating engine.....turned out it was completely out of coolant.
It sounds to me when you overheated the engine you may of cracked the head or blew the head gasket, either one would give you no heat in driving compartment ans the overheating problem

Where is the thermostat on a 95 trans am v8?

hey guys, i gotta change the thermostat on my trans am, where is it? is it something i can easily do myself or should i get someone else to do it? its for my coolant system, thanks
Where is the thermostat on a 95 trans am v8?
If you have the LT1 V8, the thermostat is located on top of the water pump

If you have the LS1 V8, follow the upper radiator hose to where it connects to the top of the intake manifold. This is where the thermostat housing is located in all LS1 models

Orange engine light comes on after driving about 15 to 20 minutes in cold weather. Didn't have problem in summer time --- problem started last winter and returned this winter. Have had codes reset and sensor changed but light still comes on. If I shut the car off and turn it back on, the code resets itself and the light goes off. I get some warm air but not enough for the heat gage to move...even after considerable driving distances. I believe that it is the Thermostat that is causing this problem, but unlike domestic cars which are easily located and changed, I don't know if this is the problem for sure and don't know where to locate the thermostat. Thermostat changed, furnace works, A/C does not?

This past winter we changed the thermostat. Wires weren't marked before removal, but connected up and furnace, heat and fan worked. Red, White, Green, and Blue wires, Connected as follows: R=Rh with jumper to Rc, W=W, G=G, B=Y. Followed instructions with new thermostat, substituting the Blue wire for the Y. Checking inside the furnace all seems correct since there is a Blue wire connected to the Yellow spot.

A/C unit worked the summer before the thermostat switch, and wasn't tested due to the thermostat switch being in the winter. Come this summer, the A/C won't come on. Any suggestions? I'm at a loss. :(

    360 Motor with A/C
Is it hard to change the thermostat in 1998 Dodge Ram Pickup?
its not as easy as it seems because of the location of it its hard to get to ,its not like on the old 360 engines it was right on the top of the manifold ,on yours is down in the top part of it,and if you,l look at it you,ll see its not going to be easy to get to it, nor will it the neck part come strait out,its easier to loosen the front bracket and let the air conditioner and everything lean forwards, this way you can get better clearance to it,other wise it will probably leak on you once you replace it if you don't get mating surface cleaned off good enough, good luck on it.
Is it hard to change the thermostat in 1998 Dodge Ram Pickup?
nah it just has two #10 bolts back it out scrape off the old gasket put the new one and walla ur done OH! put back the bolts :)
not at all....just make sure you have some anti freeze on hand because you will probly lose a little bit... you will lose more if its been run recently...but my uncle and i did it on my 97 dakota....took about 20 minutes....just make sure u get a new gasket....good luck...God Bless---Nick
It shouldn't be at all very hard to do for you but I do recommend that when doing this job that you change the coolant on it too especially if it's not been done in past. Also be sure that you test the anti-freeze and either use premixed coolant or add distilled water and use a anti-freeze tester so you know that's mixed a good 50/50 and is good.

I like to remove any hoses first off that connect up to the thermostat that way it's easier access and it doe's allow me to clean the hose mounting area later too.Once the hose is off remove any bolts and then try to twist or gently pry so that the access can be gained to the thermostat and then pop a soft clean cloth into the area where the thermostat was to prevent anything from falling into the hole.

What I do then is to try and dry the areas and then use assorted paint scrapers to remove any of the old gasket from the two thermostat mounting surfaces, then again I wipe the area being careful nothing is wet before I sand the areas very lightly with fine grain sandpaper, then wipe it off again and be sure that the surfaces are clean of any old thermostat or silicone gasket maker particles.

I prefer using high temperature gasket make bec it helps to seal the area faster , stops or slow downs any possible leaks and by laying down a bead of it in the centre of the know gasket mounting areas surface and then simply placing the new thermostat into place then applying another bead to the other piece then aligning it up so I can bolt it back on.

Once I've done that I sand and clean and dry off the surfaces where the hose went over then I'd clean the inside of the hose and also double check it to be sure that the hose isn't worn or cracking or too soft, plus I use new hose clamps.

All then that is need to is to make sure that the coolant is good and at the proper quality and levels

and by starting up the engine and then watching and topping it off you should have it circulated enough that it's at the right coolant levels but you may want to bleed the air out of the system next.

If you have a cold engine and then you remove the cap for the rad or over flow container and allow it to idle awhile as you stand back and watch the temperature gauges , you will see cooling being pushed out and any air will come out too.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way it's best to check the factory coolant and thermostat recommended spec info before purchasing such items also note how the weather is in your area and the time of year it is bec if extreme cold temperatures you might want to mix it 60/40 at tops..

I need to change the thermostat 03 Venture but cant get to the bottom bolt, any ideas?
yeah gotta use a stubby wrench, get a gear wrench from like sears, the one that ratchets so you don't have to take it off the bolt, once you get it alittle, you should be able to do it by hand.. you could also try a 1/4 inch ratchet and extension with a swivel 13mm socket, it will give you a little more room under the exhaust.... why you changing it?, did you get a engine light?, p0128?, overheat?.. give those tools a shot should work, i use them all the time on those, as well as intakes.... good luck.

You have one of those cars that has to be partly disassembled to do anything with. Not much you can do but remove exhaust or take it to a garage.
I usually buy a cheap japanese wrench and put it in a bench vise and bend it into whatever shape will fit.If you have a pawnshop nearby you can get them there for $1 or less.

Grease up the %26quot; O %26quot; ring at the bottom of the thermostat Housing with a Petroleum Based Grease Like Vaseline.

Twist the Housing left to right whilst pushing downwards on it until the housing mates firmly with the engine WITHOUT any gap , Then put the bolt in %26amp; tighten it up.

If that doesn't work , Replace the %26quot; O %26quot; ring and try again as it has likely swelled larger than the engines seating point.

Bad head gasket, cracked head.A bad temp sensor will not make it run hot. Also change the radiator cap and the new thermostat can be bad out of the box and make sure all the air is out of the system,so take the radiator cap off and let it for a while.

your cooling fans,or maybe something else, like a fan control sensor.chances are if the guage is reading it isnt that, but if you have a book, it should describe how to check resistance on the sensor.

Weathertron to Ritetemp thermostat change problem?

I purchased a Ritetemp 8022C thermostat and tried to hook it up last night and found I had too many wires. I looked on their website today and saw that I will need to purchase the 8050C because on my old thermostat I do have an Emergency Heat setting (so I guess that means I have a multistage heat pump). I still have a couple wiring questions though

My old thermostat is a Weathertron (doesn鈥檛 have a number). I labeled the wires I unhooked from it and they are:

    R, O, G, Y, X2, B, W

So now I am looking at the diagrams for the 8050C and I don鈥檛 see any that have all of R, O, G, Y, W

And since I have both O and B, I should tape off O correct

Lastly- I can鈥檛 find any information on what X2 is ?!?

Please help- it鈥檒l be awfully hot at my house tonight if I can鈥檛 get it hooked up after work!
Weathertron to Ritetemp thermostat change problem?
Heat pumps are tricky. I wouldn't replace the old t-stat unless I had to. To get you out of your current jam though, all you need to do is hook up R,G, Y and O. If there is no %26quot;O%26quot; terminal on your new thermostat you need ot hook O and R together. Your system won't work in the heating mode like this.

You need a thermostat designed for Heat Pumps.

I think X2 might be a common to run the emergency heat light but I might be mistaken.

buy a thermostat for heat pumps the emergency control is so that your furnace is used as a backup on very cold days.go to the heat pump website, and get there phone number and ask for technical help.

Do I add silicone to both sides of my thermostat casing?

I am changing my own thermostat and now that I've figured out how to use the tools... ugh... the thermostat came with a cardboard washer thing and silicone. Do I need to put the silicone on both sides of the casing or just one side will do? Thanks for the help.

You can get some rtv to seal it which is a gasket maker permatex rtv has different kinds check the local autozone and they have a whole section of it. Let it dry a whole 24hours before you use the car to form the seal after bolts get torqued.

How do I change my thermostat in my '05 Impala 3.4 V6..I changed the water pump so I need the thermostat info

Hot Coolant Temp light came on. So when I turned the heat on full blast, nothing but cool air came out. If I'm not mistaken that means the thermostat needs to be replaced. She was leaking fluid, but I changed the water pump and that stopped. Soooo, any help I can receive will be greatly appreciated.

you have an inline 4 not a v4 . But to answer your question, first check the radiator and condenser for trash or leaves that could be blocking air flow, then check condition of coolant, have you had a flush in the last 2 years? coolant breaks down over time and turn to acid and wont cool, it should be changed bi yearly. it most likley is clogged up radiator or heater core, take it to a shop and have it checked they prolly will replace the t-stat and flush out the old coolant and install an additive. How is the car running? sometimes when the car runs really lean it will get hot enough to overheat also.

I changed my thermostat because my old one kept shutting off.My new one has the same problem. Why is this?

My old thermostat never reached the set temperature. My new one is doing the same thing. what might be this problem? does my heater need to be serviced?
I changed my thermostat because my old one kept shutting off.My new one has the same problem. Why is this?
Well, it apparently is not the thermostat that is the problem.

More than likely your heater core is plugged.
I changed my thermostat because my old one kept shutting off.My new one has the same problem. Why is this?
boil the thermostat in a pot of water and see if it opens up
try a water pump--old pump may have all the water impellars worn off-also flush radiator
Has the engine ever overheated on you? You say the engine does not reach operating temp.? With the engine running does the water circulate through the radiator. If it does not then you have a restriction in the radiator. That has to be fixed first! Then check your waterpump, for leaks, and circulation. If you have water founting up from the fill cap(while off) then you may have a blown head gasket, or cracked block. You may want to take your car to your fav. shop and have them do a pressure test on it. Visit my web site for more info at www.brothersauto.vpweb.com

Why doesn't my fan turn off from the thermostat from the A.C?

I change the thermostat thingking the swith was messed up, and no luck. I have it on AUTO.
Why doesn't my fan turn off from the thermostat from the A.C?
I think what you are saying is that the fan never shuts off. If this is the case you have a bad blower relay. A blower relay is a switch with a set of contact points in it that turns the blower on and off when comanded to do so. If these points arc too many times they sometimes stick, and do not let the blower shut off, which it sounds like it did in your case. This is not a dangerous situation,as some people let their fans run all the time. You proably want to get this fixed at some point, but it is not an emergency. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
Why doesn't my fan turn off from the thermostat from the A.C?
The blower for later model central air conditioning systems is designed to run for a short while AFTER the outside unit (the condenser) has shut off. This is to prevent the refrigerant from freezing in the evaporator (the inside unit mounted on top of the furnace). As the blower continues to run, it puts heat into the evaporator which warms up the refrigerant. Otherwise, if the refrigerant were to freeze in the evaporator, the next time you turned on the air conditioner the pressure would build up in the system and you might blow out the compressor.

Choosing a thermostat temp. Why so many choices?

I want to change the thermostat on my '97 Taurus and there are three different temp thermostats to choose from. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

I don't remember the exact temperatures but you get the idea. The factory temp is correct.

    180潞C Factory

    165潞C

    135潞C
Choosing a thermostat temp. Why so many choices?
stick with the factory its the best

if you choose any other one your car is going to run rich for the whole time you are driving and you will be using more fuel for no reason
Choosing a thermostat temp. Why so many choices?
Stick with the 180, the others are for those people who have reasons, either real or imagined, to deviate. Also, the t-stat manufacturers list all that fit, not just what is called for.

Have a 2003 Ford Taurus, 3.0 liter engine, single overhead cam. No heat. Changed thermostat. Core not leaki

No heat with the Taurus. No leaking with the heater core. What's my problem and solution?
Have a 2003 Ford Taurus, 3.0 liter engine, single overhead cam. No heat. Changed thermostat. Core not leaki
    the core can be clogged
Have a 2003 Ford Taurus, 3.0 liter engine, single overhead cam. No heat. Changed thermostat. Core not leaki
Flush heater core with pressurerized water or air, then remove temp control knob not out and look to see if not cracked, then blend door actuator if moving.HTH.
Clogged heater core. Undo hoses to and from and use a hose o flush it out. My 2000 Taurus had this problem.

Or there is another problem with them that the diverter door warps. New ones are apparently a slightly different design that does not warp.
Make sure the radiator is not low.
No single overhead cam Taurus engines.. only Overhead valve (aka 2 valve or vulcan) and a 3.0 DOHC (dual overhead cam)

If core not leaking or plugged and no restrictions (feel both sides of heater hose.. both will be hot after running for a while...

Make sure vehicle has cooling system bleed out of air (after awhile upper hose will be hot) and if still no fix, most likely blend door motor behind the radio has stripped the gears on it's electric motor gearing and hince no heat..requiring a replacement of the part to get heat back

  • Why do dads get mad when someone touches the thermostat AC?

i made the temperature of the thermostat from 78 to 72 cuz wen i came home after my baseball game it was like a heat wave inside, the weather outside is more comfortable than in my house. my dad asked who changed the thermostat and i said it was me and he got pissed at me i thot it was pretty funny tho, but why the hell do fathers get mad at this?
Why do dads get mad when someone touches the thermostat AC?
free angel is right. It's the money. At least you have an ac. I didn't have one in my room (and it was an attic room) growing up because my father didn't want the added expense. It was the first thing I bought when I moved out. BTW, my father is now retired and lives in florida and when we visit, we SUFFER.
Why do dads get mad when someone touches the thermostat AC?
They are usually control freaks and poor examples of what a real man should be.
Sounds like your dad wants to be in control. Maybe next time your uncomfortable just go in your room and open the window.
Sometimes I just think it's a male thing. I don't know how old your father is but as you get older, your body doesn't regulate temperatures like it used to. Maybe he gets cold easily. Could be it's just a quirky thing of your dads! LOL
    Because fathers pay the bill.

Where can I find and how can I change the thermostat and the gasket of a Toyota Corolla 1982?

I am not personally familiar with that particular car, however, they all are basically the same. Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine. That is more than likely where the thermostat is located. Look for an aluminum housing held on by 2 or 3 bolts and is rounded enough for a thermostat to sit in. Changing the gasket is obvious. Just make sure to clean the old one off completely or it will cause the new one to leak. Gasket sealer is not really necessary but most people put some on anyway. If you must put sealer on the gasket, don't use much to prevent such a mess. You can use RTV sealer and just skim a thin coat on one or both sides of the gasket. That will help keep it in place while installing the housing.

Where is the thermostat located at on a dodge ram 1500 2003?
what engine does it have in it because all of them aren't located at the top of the hose but the 4.7 ,s are located on the bottom hose next to the block,so you need to let us know which engine it has in it,good luck.
Where is the thermostat located at on a dodge ram 1500 2003?
Follow the upper radiator hose to where it attaches to the engine block. That should be your thermostat housing.
As Saxster said! It will be on the drivers side, under the AC compressor. You can access it without removing anything but the radiator hose

We have a 2002 Taurus and it's making very little heat. We did change the thermostat but not better.?

A/C pump runs when the defrost is on like it's supposed to. We did change the thermostat. Is it possible that the heater core is going bad. We've already replaced the blower motor 2 years ago.
We have a 2002 Taurus and it's making very little heat. We did change the thermostat but not better.?
I was going to suggest the heater core, but I think you may have answered your own question. Best advice would be to have a qualified mechanic check the problem out prior to investing in any costly repairs.
We have a 2002 Taurus and it's making very little heat. We did change the thermostat but not better.?
Does the temp gage run at the normal temp? If it does then it is the heater core. You can try back flushing the core with forced pressure from a hose and if it is a dirty core your car will give much better heat. SOmetimes the core gets plugged and the only option is replacement
NEXT TIME YOU RUN YOUR CAR,,FEEL BOTH HEATER HOSES AOUND THE HEATER CORE AREA,,, REMEMBER,, IT COULD BE HOT,,, BECARFUL,,, IF THEY ARE THE SAME TEMPATURE,, WATER IS CIRCULATING FINE,,IF NOT, GET A RADIATOR FLUSH KID, (PRESTON) FROM WALMART,,DISCONNET BOTH END OF HEATER HOSES FROM ENGING BLOCK, PUT THE PART THAT THE WATER HOSE GOES ON,,,, FLUSH THE HEATER CORE,,,,, THIS COULD BE ONE PROBLEM,,OR THE ADJUSTMENT LEVER OF YOU HEATER ON YOU DASH BOARD, MIGHT BE OUT OF ADJUSTMENT,,,,THERE IS A DOOR THAT ADJUSTS HOW MUCH TO A DOOR OPENS THIS REGULATES HOW MUCH HEAT GOES INSIDE,, IS IT LIKE ADJUSTING A WATER FAUCET AT HOME,, YOUR ADJUST THE WATER TEMPATURE,,
i don,t think the heater core is bad but it might be clogged up. take the heater hoses off and take a garden hose and flush out the core. you also might check the radiator too to make sure it,s full.
It is also possible that you have air in the system. This would prevent the heater core from doing it's job. When you replaced the thermostat, did you use one that is set to open at the original factory setting? If not, you may have to change it again. BE SURE THAT YOU USE ONLY GENUINE FORD COOLANT!!!!! Anything else will cause problems on down the road. There is no such thing as %26quot;universal%26quot; coolant. Also, go to a do-it-yourself car wash and clean the engine compartment, especially the space between the radiator and the A/C condenser. This area always collects debris, like leaves and road dirt. The presence of foreign objects here restricts the flow of air around both surfaces. Good Luck!!! If this is a 3.8 liter engine, it is also likely that your head gaskets are bad and need replacing. If this is a 3.0 engine, you are luckier.

  • How do I change the thermostat in my 2001 chevy silverado?

Follow the (big) upper radiator hose to the engine.

Use a half inch socket and ratchet and remove the two bolts holing the housing to the intake manifold.

    Lift it up.

Pry the thermostat out of the manifold.

    *Note the spring goes downward.

    Put the new thermostat in.

put the gasket over the thermostat.

    Put the housing back on.

    Refill your radiator.
How do I change the thermostat in my 2001 chevy silverado?
Exactly how depends on which engine is in yours. The thermostat on a Silverado is not a separate part but a complete housing including the water outlet that bolts to the front of the engine. Remove the air filter assembly and inlet for access. Remove the water hose. Remove the two bolts holding the housing to the block It usually lifts right off but it might be stuck to the block because there is an O ring that sometimes sticks to the block and housing. Just pull it off. install a new o ring reinstall the bolts and the hose.
How do I change the thermostat in my 2001 chevy silverado?
Take it to an auto mechanic.

sounds dumb but if it is bad the it wont hold the pressure and causes your car to overheat
I have a 94 mustang GT V 8. Ihave changed the thermostat and water pump but it stills runs hot.?
Check for blockage in the hoses- also could be a blown head gasket or something- check the oil to see if the color is milky.
where do you live? Does this only occur in the summer or have you had problems in all types of weather, hot or cold? How long have you had the car, how many miles does it have, and how long has the problem been going on for? I just need a little more info and maybe I can help you out.
I had the same problem. I kept on overheating my car and I changed the thermostat and flushed the radiator. YOu might want to check out your water temperature sensor which should be on your engine block. That read you water temperature and sends the signal to your dash. Check it out if it read hot after you change that Im not sure what it could be.

How do i locate and change the thermostat in a 1996 mitsubishi eclipse?

The thermostat on that is under the radiator cap which is on the engine. Pull the cap off and the thermostat is right there, pull it out and put another one in, top off coolant and bleed the system.
How do i locate and change the thermostat in a 1996 mitsubishi eclipse?
The thermostat is located under the housing where the upper radiator hose connects. Drain the coolant and if its very old you might as well replace it with fresh coolant when your done. To remove the housing just take the two bolts off and if its still tight tap it with a small hammer. Tap not beat. Use a scraper to clean the old gasket off and once the surface is clean install the new thermostat inside the housing. It will only gfit the right way which is with the spring down. Install the new gasket and do not use any type of RTV or sealant. Install the housing and fill the radiator and away you go.
How do i locate and change the thermostat in a 1996 mitsubishi eclipse?
Drain the coolant from the radiator %26amp; properly dispose. Follow the top rad hose to the engine. Remove the thermostat housing. Clean %26amp; dry both surfaces. Install a new gasket along with a new thermostat. Make sure it is installed with the spring side inside the block/head. The air must be purged while refilling the coolant.

What is the basic proceedure for changing the engine coolant and thermostat in my 1993 Honda Accord?

4-cyl. temp gauge stays 'cold.' Heater is warm, never hot. Thanks in advance. You're info will save me $200+.
What is the basic proceedure for changing the engine coolant and thermostat in my 1993 Honda Accord?
Easiest way to do it is like this: Don't mess with the drain plugs on your radiator. Instead, put your drain pan under the front of the car where the lower radiator hose goes into the bottom of your radiator. Loosen the hose clamp so you can move it freely and then carefully pull that bottom hose away from the radiator. It'll take some effort, but it's better than breaking off a frozen drain plug and having to replace your radiator as a result. Be sure to put that hose back on and tighten up the hose clamp when you're done draining -- yeah, I know, DUH, but a friend of mine forgot to do that once and ended up with radiator fluid all over his garage.

To replace the themostat, you'll need a new thermostat AND a new thermostat gasket from the dealer or a parts store. After you've drained the radiator, follow the top radiator hose to the engine. There should be a pipe piece with a 90-degree bend in it and a couple of screws or bolts holding it on the engine block. Remove the bolts or screws and pull that piece off. You'll see your old thermostat sitting in there. Pull it out, then use a screwdriver or a razor blade to scrape the old gasket away. Put the new thermostat and gasket in place, then put the %26quot;elbow%26quot; piece back on. Be sure not to over-tighten it because the gasket won't work properly if you do that. Better to go easy on it and then tighten it later if it leaks.

Once you're done, add a 50/50 mix of coolant and water to the radiator. If you want to clean out the radiator without having to worry about rotting the radiator core, put a gallon of distilled water in the radiator first, then start the engine and let it run for about 10-15 minutes (long enough for the thermostat to open and let the distilled water circulate through the engine). Then shut it off, drain the water out just like you drained the old radiator fluid out, put the hose back and tighten up the clamp, and add your 50/50 mix of radiator fluid.
What is the basic proceedure for changing the engine coolant and thermostat in my 1993 Honda Accord?
follow upper hose to engine remove hose un do 2 10 mm bolts remove thermostat replace it with spring toward engine don't over tighten 10 mm bolts put hose back on look for a drain on the bottom of the radiator loosen it until all the antifreeze drains out Thain tighten it

look for 12 mm nut looking bolt with a hole in the middle it should be near the thermostat loosen that a couple turns now fill radiator until antifreeze comes out that hole now tighten it and top off radiator and your done

    i only charge 5 stars
Locate the drain plug on the engine block or radiator and dump the existing coolant. Locate the thermostat which will be on top of the engine block and remove. Replace with a new thermostat and gasket. Partially fill system with new coolant and run the engine at idle, slowly topping up the coolant as the engine gets warm and gets rid of any air in the system. When you get to the stage that the system will not take anymore coolant replace the filler cap and run at a higher RPM for a while. Let it cool and top up as needed.
one thing that wasnt mentioned. make sure you open the bleeder valve when filling it with coolant, it should be right above the thermostat which should be on the passenger side
Thermostats are reasonably cheap so this is a fairly simple job if you're handy with a wrench and screwdriver.

Your thermostat (th) is probably located at the engine block end of the top hose coming off your radiator. Make sure you buy the new th before you start and that it has the proper gaskets.

Drain the coolant from the small petcock on the bottom of your radiator, capture the coolant, don't let it run down the driveway. It's is toxic to animals but tasty and they will try to drink it. Once the radiator is drained, then you can remove the hose connected to the th housing on top of the engine block. Then, unbolt the th housing carefully, don't want to strip a bolt hole...(turn lefty-loosy-righty-tighty) The th should just lift out.

Place the replacement in the hole, clean the surface around the hole so the new gasket will seat tightly, maybe even a bit of permatex to create a watertight seal and hold the gasket in place, then put the th housing back on, tighten it down but don't overtighten, it's an aluminum block and can easily be damaged, reconnect the hose...REMEMBER to CLOSE the drain petcock, refill with coolant in the proportions required by the owner's manual and crank it up. Check for leaks.

To verify that it was the th that was bad, go boil some water on the stove and put the old th in. Watch for it to open somewhere around 160*-180* F and see if it was opening all the way.

  • How do you change the thermostat on a 1993 Acura integra?

the t-stat is located at the back of the head in the LOWER radiator hose connection below the distributor-on the passenger side of engine. find the end of the hose and remove the part it connects to on the engine-you will need to be patient as one of the 10mm bolts that hold the thermostat housing is vvery hard to access easily-anything in the way should be removed,if possible to make it possible to remove...remember when you add coolant to bleed the system via the bleed screw located where the UPPER radiator connecs to the engine on the passenger side at the front of the cylinder head- when air stops coming out close the screw by tightening it. continue filling untill full (fill reservoir too) . run engine untill warmed up, stop it and let it cool down-re-check level of coolant.fill as needed.

Also remember to check everywhere for coolant leaks before your date!!!!!!

Be sure its at the upper radiator hose before you start, on some of the newer cars the thermostat is at the lower rad. hose, this has prove to help the engine cool better, and use new coolant and a pan to catch the old coolant. God Bless

2.0L 5 Speed. with A/C. The thermostat is on the bottom side of the waterpump and is blocked by the Alternator and A/C unit. Is there a mechanic out there than can tell me the easiest way to get to the thermostat. 1997 Jetta Easiest way to get to and change the Thermostat? Also ECT Specs?
Volkswagen has a problem with the water pump impeller falling off causing overheating, running hot, no circulation, cooling fan not kicking on. If this might be your problem you can see the water pump impeller after removing the thermostat. To get the thermostat you need a 1/4%26quot; drive 8mm or 10mm socket with a 1/4%26quot; drive wobble socket. This may require removing the alternator on some models. Hope this helps.

Nope mine is constantly off as my house is like an oven 24/7. Especially the front room. Like when you close the doors in my house it just traps the hot air in and the whole place just heats up like an oven.
Yes.In the winter, we turn the thermostat down at night, and use so many covers, we have to get out of bed to turn over! :)
    Yup i do.
No, because my building does not allow the individual residents to set the thermostat - it is all controlled from the main switch.
I try to be very conservative in climate control at home (NYC). I only use a room size AC and then, only when necessary, maybe 6-10 times a year. In the heating season I have the thermostat set at 60 all the time. If need be I raise it manually. It is a programmable thermostat, meaning that at the next cycle the temperature will revert back to 60.
You're brilliant. That's exactly why I got a programmable thermostat and that's how I've programmed it. Here's an example: When others in the household belly-ache about it being too cool in the wintertime I just tell them to put on more clothes. I try to get devious by switching from fahrenheit to celcius to confuse people. You've got it. I'm old enough to understand both systems and I can convert from one to the other, too. Here's a conversion chart for anyone interested.

My 2000 VW Passat has no heat.We changed the thermostat and now it runs hot. What could be wrong? ?

Can too much antifreeze cause this? The auto parts store said it could be a clogged heater core [how do you unclog it?]

I agree with Mike T. The thermostat is in upside down. Also, if you end up having to remove the heater core, and it is clogged, it would be beneficial to go ahead and replace it while you have it out, because they are a pain in the butt to take out and put back, so why not replace it and solve the problem in case it can't be cleaned out and you would end up just having to take it out again.

Water pump. On these cars the impellers are plastic and the blades shear off so you have no coolant flow. The engine gets really hot but the radiator stays cool. Since the temp sensor is in the bottom of the radiator it doesn't tell you the engine is overheating.

    Stupid design overall.

Change the Timing Belt at the same time as the Water Pump and hope the Head Gasket isn't blown.
Your antifreeze/water mixture needs to be 50-50.

50% water, and 50% antifreeze. Putting too much antifreeze in the mixture, can cause adverse effects. Getting hotter than it should.

We changed the thermostat? Would that be YOU and someone else?

1.Did you install the thermostat in the proper direction? It only goes one way.

2.Did you bleed the air out of the cooling system? If you didn't you will have trapped air. This causes the engine to overheat, because no coolant is present where it needs to be. It's just one big trapped air bubble!

IF, you and someone else were the one to replace the thermostat, and didn't have a manual present, or may want to check this anyway,

    here is some information,

    http://www.autozone.com/addVehicleId,259鈥?/a>

This is an online AutoZone repair guide for the VW Passat made in 2000. (Encompasses a few other years also)

Scroll down the page, (About three-fourths the way down) until you come to the heading,

    -%26gt; 1996-00 A4 and 1998-00 Passat Models

Read down through there, about the proper way to bleed the air out of the system. (Down under the illustrations, and under -%26gt; To refill:

This air could be trapped for a long time. You must bleed the air out!

3.What antifreeze did you install? Did you match the correct type you're supposed to use? If you just topped the antifreeze off, and used the wrong type, you have contaminated the present antifreeze, and it's no good! There are two types of antifreeze used, according to this AutoZone manual. One is Blue-Green in color, (G11), and one is Red in color (G12) If you installed the everyday Bright Green color stuff, you have contaminated any present antifreeze. It's no good! COMPLETELY drain it, and refill. (You can't use the Yellow stuff either!)

If your Passat uses the G12 antifreeze, and you have installed the wrong antifreeze with it, you'll know it! It'll be Brown in color!

Barring this is not the problem, check your heater valve control. It should be in a circuit of the hoses, that lead from your heater core to your engine. I know this sounds like sketchy information, but I can't find info on where it's located to tell you.

Look for hoses that are about the size of a man's thumb. (3/4 inch Outer Diameter, or 5/8th's inch O.D.)

See if you see any leading from the engine going towards the firewall.

The firewall is the area behind the engine, and below the windshield.

There should be a control valve unit that is screwed into the top, (or bolted on), or side of the engine. This control valve is what lets hot water pass from your engine, through your heater core. Your heater core will probably be under the dash, and you can't see it. It may be on the firewall, and has a box like structure around it. You should see two brass tubes coming out of the firewall, and hoses leading to them.

Follow the hoses back to the engine, and one of them has this control.

Have someone sit inside the car, while it's running, and move the heater control. See if the heater control valve moves a lever on top.

If it doesn't move, there's the source of your problem. Replace it.

You may have a thermostat type heater/AC control in your dash.

When these do not work, the heater control valve won't operate.

    ('Natch!)

Lastly, you may have a clogged heater core. The heater core looks like a small radiator. It is! Hot water flows through it, and the car's heater fan blows air across it. The heater core is made of copper or aluminum, and has very small tubes inside. If you don't flush your cooling system out once a year, you can get a build-up of calcium deposits from your faucet water. (The manual, does mention it's distilled water ,when the car comes from the factory. That stuff costs bucks! Would be worth it now!)

You'll probably, have to have a pro change the heater core, if this is the problem.
is the thermostat in right? the spring goes into the block. it could be the heater core plugged. if your going to flush the core yourself then take the heater hoses off, get a garden hose and flush out the heater core going back and forth in each nozzle.too much anti-freeze won,t make it overheat, just not enough will do that.also if the fan not working will make it overheat and also a dirty radiator will also make it overheat. anytime you replace something about the cooling system you have to bleed the air out so it can circulate.
This is a common VW problem, VW uses a water pump with a plastic impeller, the impeller cracks and separates from the metal shaft. Its not an easy fix, but you need to replace your water pump. You can upgrade to a metal impeller pump, depending on mileage, I would do the timing belt at the same time, most of the labor to get to the water pump and the timing belt is the same.
you replace it, you can try taking it out and blowing compressed air threw it but your best bet is to get a new one. If you temp is up and still getting cold air thats most likely what it is.
You put the thermostat in upside down.
did you purge your cooling system, you may have a air pocket in you motor. take the rad. cap off and idle the car until it gets norm. temp. the air bubble out.feel your heater hoses to see if there up if they are its not cloged.
